Neti Pot

So once again I was diagnosed with the terrible chronic happenings of sinus infection. Those of you that know me I don't just get sinus infection, I get it's evil red-headed step b***h mother. So recently I got one form of it with this awful tasting and smelling mucous that was running down my throat and making me sick, it would also run from my nose. Triple B boy was back and in full form. Tuesday night I couldn't stand it any longer! I decided to go to the urgent care facility in the hospital, which is really the emergency room. I did this so I could get some instant medication and not have to wait until the next day. The waiting room definetly couldn't have been worse. I picked the worst time to go. There were three people waiting to be seen puking into bags and trashcans, there was a man with his finger cut off with blood pouring out and a concussed boy. They and myself were all waiting because the doctors were with a 3 month baby that passed in a car accident and the father who got helicoptered to DSM. So I look at myself and think, if one person in this room asks me what is wrong with me, do I make something up to sound more legit in the time of need or go with "my nose hurts, which is making my stomach hurt". Not exactly real impressive emergency room talk, especially in comparison to the other people. The doctor finally saw me (2 long hours later) and I was given some heavy antibiotics and instructions to buy a Neti Pot. What in God's name is a Neti Pot you ask?? Let me explain it to you...

A Neti Pot is a nasal irragation system. I looks like a little blue genie lamp that I put 8 oz of warm to hot water in and a packet of powder mix that is Sodium Chloride and Sodium Bicarbonate. I mix the wonder solution together and bend over the sink, tilt my head to one side, and pour the spout into one nostril, the solution goes up my nose, into my sinus cavities and out the other nostril, taking with it lots of little green buddies. I repeat for the other nostril. After I've gotten my "Neti" on for about 4 times since I bought it, I am feeling much better, I still get some drainage, but about 75% less than two days ago. It's a beautiful tool really.

Halloween 2010

So this year's halloween costume wasn't as impressive as one's in the past, but it was creative and with a group of people. So it was my fourth year of halloween at Central College. So I thought I would flash back the four years of my halloween adventures.

Busy, Busy, Busy

This has been quite the week so far, and will continue to rock my world. I have a big Cellular Biology exam on Friday, had a Spanish exam today, have a Epidemiology exam tomorrow, and a Spanish Oral exam on Friday. It will end up as quite the week, I have all my student coaching responsibilties, studying for the GRE exam, and happily managing a relationship with Alex. That being said, I just checked my facebook and am now blogging. Procrastination is an art.

Highlight Videos...

Throughout student coaching I've been able to squeeze out my creative juices through the making of highlight videos. This went from Mid-year and end of the year, to including camp, to now: a new one every other week, camp, highlight for recruits, and end of the year. So creativity and imagination is starting to run dry, a new video each week and not making it boring is a challenge! Here are a couple of the videos that I've made and posted onto YouTube.

A loss...then a win.

Whether it is a curse or a blessing, it is almost as if your regular season is expected be undefeated when you're talking about Central Football. Central has 30 Conference Championships and that is more the the whole conference COMBINED! We lost to Coe College this saturday, rather frustrating. Coe didn't beat us, we lost the game. This puts us 1-1 in the conference and 3-1 on the season. Playoffs can still happen, but we'll need some magic for us to share the conference title.


Then, I get home to Pella and I head down to the Athletic Complex to see if Alex's soccer game has finished up and they WON! The lady Dutch beat the Beavers of Buena Vista for their first win of the season. I was really happy for Alex, despite my day being dull from the loss. We play Cornell next week, a nice rebound game.

Corwin Came to Central

Jeff Corwin, famous for his animal planet shows and nature adventures on TV, came to talk on Central's campus last week. He came to talk about animal conservation, and how we can help the animal populations. He is a very entertaining speaker, and has a job I'm extremely jealous of. Corwin travels the world reporting on, conserving, and taping animals. He used many examples of how "God's course" needs to be taken, but he doesn't enjoy seeing animals become extinct. He also explained that many animals are conserved at the expense of other species. All very interesting. But overall, I thought it was pretty cool, that small private college like Central was able to get Jeff Corwin to come.

A good football weekend!

This weekend, football wise, started for me on Saturday when THE Iowa Hawks slaughtered the Iowa State cyclones. I watched the game in Davenport, Ia with fellow coaches in Chili's. The Hawks won 35-7. That victory really just set the tone for the weekend as the Dutch played in Rock Island, Ill. against Augustana College. We (Central) won 28-23, in what might have been one of the ugliest victories I've been apart of, we won despite 5 turnovers and a safety. But, what was sweet was that was the second victory for my two college teams. When we got back, I had to capture and code the film so the players and coaches can watch it online. For those of you that don't know what coding film is; every play that takes place in the game, we code: Down, distance, formation, gain, run/pass, blitz #, back set, play result, coverage, defense formation, etc. IT SUCKS in other words. Well, I was in the coaches office accomplishing this task and others until 3 A.M. Well, 'round 11, i decided to wake up again and gather myself to a chair in my room, check my fantasy team and sloth all Sunday watching football. (glorious). I watched the Bears defeat the Lions in what should have been a loss. But, chalk one up for the Bears in the "W" column! haha. Calvin Johnson of the Lions, caught a TD pass with :34 seconds left in the game and it was called incomplete b/c of some dumb NFL rule about holding the ball through the play. So..BEARS WIN! haha. Then, like my normal self, I pushed homework due Monday until the sun has gone down and continue to procrastinate now.

This whole time, Alex has been in Minnesota playing soccer since Friday about noon. Can't wait to see her at our 8 AM class we have together, It'll be the first time in 3 days. Her being away was probably the one downside to the weekend. Her campaign in Minnesota left her soccer team 0-2 after the weekend, but she did mention a bright side being the team going to the Mall of America (surprise, surprise). haha

This catch, is what won/lost the game for the Bears/Lions.

Busy Weekend

This past Saturday, my parents drove to Pella to watch me Student Coach as the Dutch beat Wisconsin Osh Kosh 34-28. But that's extremely normal for my parents to come to a home football game, what made it different was immediately following, My parents and I walked over to Central's soccer field to watch Alex play against Milikin. It was fun. My parents and Alex and her mom went my football game, then my parents, Alex's parents and myself went over to the soccer game. It was a long but nice 5 1/2 hours of college sports. Then the Kleis' invited my familt over for flank steak sandwiches and hanging out. It was a ton of fun. Things are really clicking with me and Alex and it was cool to see my parents talk with and hang with Alex's parents like they've known each other for years.

Then on Sunday, Alex and I drove to DSM to celebrate my grandparent's 50th wedding anniversary which was piggybacked by my Great Aunt Sherri and Great Uncle Steve's 40th wedding anniversary. It was a ton of fun, we had cake and homemade ice cream and a good meal in the fellowship hall of my Grandpa Bolsem's church, where he is the preacher. It was all the family together as my uncle and his girlfriend Julie were there along with my sisters and their husbands. It was good to see my nephew Jack again, he's really growing. Ashley and Ryan live in Witchita, but make the drive more often then they probably prefer, so I've gotten to see Jack a decent amount of times since he was born. But overall it was a busy weekend with a lot of family time, but well worth the awkward conversations and pictures. Here are a few from the weekend.

Big Switch

This week, I went into the coaches office and conference room reporting for Student Coaching duties like any other day, when Coach McMartin called me into his office. My first thought was, "Crap, what did I do now?" The last time I got "called" into Coach Mac's office, it was to chew my butt about how I put one of our linebackers doing a cut-throat non-verbal in the highlight film, nicely accompianed by a lion roar in the background (some of my better editing work). But this time, it was to ask me if I mind switching to Tight Ends to coach rather than Linebackers. Let me help you with some background knowledge; I played football in H.S., now I am a student coach for Central College's football team. My freshman and sophomore years I was a QB student coach and learned the offense, a position I knew and felt familiar with, then moved to linebackers my junior year to broaden my coaching knowledge for my potential coaching future. Then this year, my senior year, I started with the linebackers through training camp and just got shifted. It's a big change, it has been 1 and a 1/2 years since I knew Central's offense, not to mention a trip to Europe for 4 months, where the last place my mind was, was on football. Anyway, I am now a Tight End's student coach under the watch of Tight Ends coach Eric Jones. Should be fun.
